Tyres are something you cannot afford to neglect. By neglecting them you could be putting yourself in great danger, also your passengers and other road users. You will need to check your tyres more often than you would perhaps think, at least monthly, but ideally every couple of weeks.

When checking your tyres you should look for the following

1.Check overall condition of tyres

You should check the inner and outer side walls of your tyres for any signs of damage, cuts and abrasions etc.

2.Check tyre tread depth.

Measuring tyre tread depth with 10 pence CoinTyre depth measurment1.6mm is the absolute minimum. The legal minimum tread depth for a car tyre is 1.6mm and this must be over ¾ of the width and over the full circumference of the tyre. Most car tyres have wear indicators that allow you to see quickly whether a tyre is in need of replacement. This usually consists of six small ribs within the main treads of the tyre. You can tell that your tyre needs changing when these ribs are the same level as the tread on the tyre. If your tyres do not have wear indicators you could use a tyre tread depth gauge. A gauge will give you a fast and easy-to-read measurement of the tyre tread depth. Alternatively you could measure the tread depth by using the edge of a 10 pence piece. The rows of small dots just inside the circumference of a ten pence piece are approximately 1.6mm from the edge.

3.Check all tyre pressures.

According to your car manufactures specifications. It's important for your safety and the safety of other road users to make sure that your tyres are kept at the correct pressure. By making sure your tyres have the correct tyre pressure, you will ensure that your car handles correctly. Also you will use less fuel and your tyres will last longer. Your tyres can be under inflated without looking flat so regularly check that your tyres are the correct pressure. The easiest way to check this is by using a tyre pressure gauge. If your tyres are in need of a bit of air there are plenty of gadgets available to help you inflate your tyres at the roadside. These can range from simple foot pumps to electronic pumps that plug into your cigarette lighter. Most pumps come with a pressure gauge built in.

4.Check for signs of irregular wear.

This could be a sign that your tyres are under inflated or there is a problem with either your vehicles tracking, wheel bearings or ball joints and should be looked at by a professional.

5.Check and examine the spare tyre on points 1,2 and 3

Always check that your spare tyre is in in good condition even though it is only used for a back up. It will only add to your problems should you have a puncture while your out and about.

If your tyres are not roadworthy you will not be insured to drive your car. Also for each tyre that is illegal you could receive a fine of up to £2500 and 3 penalty points on your driving licence. And that includes your spare wheel.
