The vehicle scrappage scheme

This scheme is set to run from May 2009 through to March 2010 depending on whether the fixed budget runs out sooner. The Government have made no indications that the scheme will continue any longer than this

The Government has set aside £300m for the scheme and will pay £1,000 towards the cost of a new vehicle when the old one is scrapped, the remaining £1,000 will come from the vehicle manufacturer.

It is a voluntary discount scheme whereby motor dealers will give motorists £2,000 or more towards a new vehicle when they trade in a car or van that is over 10 years old for scrap.

To take advantage of this discount you will need to contact your local dealer to see if they are part of the scheme.

To be eligible for the discount the vehicle being traded in must:

  • be a van or small car weighing up to 3,500kg
  • registered in the UK on or before 31st August 1999
  • be registered with the DVLA in your name and registered continuously in your name for 12 months before the ordering of your new vehicle
  • have a UK address on the registration documents
  • Current MOT certificate and tax disc within 14 days of expiry at the time of order of your new vehicle
  • be insured

The new vehicle must:

  • be a van or small car weighing up to 3,500kg
  • be registered in the UK on or after mid May 2009
  • declared new at registration in the UK with no former keepers
  • the new vehicle must be registered to the same person trading in the old vehicle

Which manufacturers are taking part?

Forty one manufacturers have signed up to take part in the scheme:

Allied Vehicles, Audi, Bently, BMW, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Citroen, Daihatsu, Fiat, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Isuzu, Iveco, Jaguar, Kia, Land Rover, London Taxis International, Mazda, Mercedes, MG Motor, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Perodua, Peugeot Porsche, Proton, Renault, Renault Trucks, Rolls Royce, Saab, Seat, SECMA UK, Skoda, Ssangyong, Subaru, Suzuki, Toyota, Vauxhall, Volkswagen, Volvo.
